finally figured out why the blue orb wouldn't get on fire.
i was using the smudge tool to stretch out the solid paint to make flares but i needed to use the airbrush in *Photoshop for the ball then use liquefy (forgot how i did this last time)
*if the painting looks dark i did this on a back light TV monitor and looks different depending on the monitor
